The decision to hire an attorney is an important one. Consumers are encouraged to research lawyers and law firms and to meet with attorneys to determine if the attorney-client relationship will be a good fit.
Recognizing this, the Florida Bar and other private organizations have developed methods to help the consumer locate quality lawyers and reputable law firms. This methodology involves researching credentials, background and experience utilizing peer reviews and ratings, as well as the qualifications related to education and certification.
Certification is the Florida Bar’s highest level of evaluation of the competency and experience of attorneys in the 24 areas of law approved for certification by the Supreme Court of Florida. Board certification recognizes attorneys’:
- special knowledge
- proficiency in various areas of law and professionalism
- ethics in practice
Board certified lawyers are evaluated for professionalism and tested for expertise. Only 6% of the Florida Bar’s eligible members are board certified.
